PSHE at Clarendon Federation
Intent
At Clarendon Federation, we believe that Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education is at the heart of preparing children to become happy, healthy, respectful and responsible citizens. Our PSHE curriculum supports every child to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to thrive both now and in the future.
Using the Coram SCARF programme, our curriculum promotes children's mental health and emotional wellbeing, helping them to build positive relationships, develop resilience and make informed, safe choices. SCARF is based around the values of Safety, Caring, Achievement, Resilience and Friendship, which closely reflect our own school values and aspirations.
Our PSHE curriculum aims to:
- develop children's self-awareness, confidence and self-esteem;
- promote positive mental health and emotional wellbeing;
- teach children how to build healthy, respectful relationships;
- enable children to understand how to stay safe, both online and offline;
- encourage children to lead healthy lifestyles and make informed choices;
- prepare children for life in modern Britain by promoting respect, equality, diversity and inclusion;
- equip children with the knowledge and skills needed to become responsible members of their community.
Through carefully planned learning, we aim to nurture children who are kind, curious, resilient and ready to make a positive contribution to society.
Implementation
PSHE is taught as a discrete weekly lesson using the Coram SCARF programme, ensuring full coverage of the statutory Relationships Education, Health Education and the non-statutory aspects of PSHE.
The curriculum is carefully sequenced from EYFS to Year 6, allowing knowledge and skills to build progressively over time. Learning is organised into six key themes:
- Me and My Relationships
- Valuing Difference
- Keeping Myself Safe
- Rights and Responsibilities
- Being My Best
- Growing and Changing
Lessons are engaging, interactive and discussion-based, encouraging children to explore ideas, ask questions and reflect on their own experiences within a safe and supportive environment.
Teachers use a range of strategies including:
- high-quality class discussions;
- collaborative learning;
- role play and drama;
- stories and real-life scenarios;
- circle time;
- reflection and mindfulness activities;
- problem-solving tasks.
Children are encouraged to develop the vocabulary needed to express their thoughts and feelings confidently and respectfully.
PSHE is further enriched through:
- assemblies;
- themed awareness days and national campaigns;
- visitors and workshops;
- pupil leadership opportunities;
- safeguarding education;
- online safety learning;
- links with our wider curriculum.
Our curriculum is inclusive and accessible for all learners. Teachers adapt learning to meet the needs of every child, ensuring all pupils can participate fully and achieve success.
Impact
By the time children leave Clarendon Federation, they will have developed the confidence, knowledge and skills to make positive choices and navigate the opportunities and challenges of modern life.
Children will:
- understand how to maintain positive physical and mental health;
- demonstrate empathy, kindness and respect towards others;
- build healthy friendships and relationships;
- know how to recognise and manage risks and seek help when needed;
- understand their rights and responsibilities within school and the wider community;
- value diversity and celebrate differences;
- communicate effectively and resolve conflicts respectfully;
- show increasing independence, resilience and self-confidence.
The impact of our PSHE curriculum is seen through:
- confident, respectful and responsible pupils;
- positive behaviour and relationships across the school;
- strong pupil voice and participation;
- children's ability to talk openly about emotions, wellbeing and safety;
- high levels of engagement during lessons and wider school life.
Assessment is ongoing and informs future teaching. Teachers use discussion, observation, pupil reflection and SCARF assessment tools to monitor children's understanding and progress, ensuring that every child continues to flourish academically, socially and emotionally.
Ultimately, our PSHE curriculum enables children to embody the values of Clarendon Federation, leaving us well prepared for the next stage of their education and equipped with the skills to become compassionate, resilient and responsible members of society.
