Our Year 6 Curriculum

Year 6 is an exciting and important final stage of a child's primary school journey. Our curriculum is designed to build upon the knowledge, skills and understanding children have developed throughout their time in primary school, while preparing them with confidence for the transition to secondary education.

Each day, children take part in carefully planned direct teaching in Reading, English and Mathematics. Learning is carefully sequenced to build on prior knowledge, introduce new learning and provide regular opportunities to practise, revisit and apply important knowledge and skills. This helps children to deepen their understanding, make meaningful connections and develop increasing confidence and independence.

In Reading, children explore a rich and challenging range of high-quality fiction, non-fiction and poetry. They develop fluency, comprehension and vocabulary while learning to analyse texts, make inferences, discuss themes and ideas, and justify their opinions using evidence.

In English, carefully chosen texts and meaningful experiences inspire children to write for a wide range of purposes and audiences. Children continue to develop their skills in planning, drafting, editing and refining their writing, while applying an increasingly secure understanding of vocabulary, grammar, punctuation and spelling.

In Mathematics, children develop fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills across the Year 6 curriculum. They are encouraged to explain their thinking clearly, make connections between mathematical concepts and apply their knowledge confidently to increasingly complex and unfamiliar problems. Regular opportunities to revisit prior learning help to strengthen understanding and prepare children for the next stage of their education.

Our wider curriculum is broad, ambitious and carefully sequenced to ensure children develop a rich body of knowledge across subjects including Science, History, Geography, Computing, Art, Design and Technology, Music, Physical Education and Religious Education. Children are encouraged to think critically, ask thoughtful questions, investigate ideas and apply their learning in meaningful contexts.

Alongside academic learning, Year 6 provides important opportunities for children to develop leadership, responsibility and independence. As the oldest children in the school, they are encouraged to act as positive role models, contribute to the wider school community and take increasing ownership of their learning and personal development.

Throughout the year, we support every child to develop resilience, confidence and a positive attitude towards challenge. Our aim is for every child to leave Year 6 as a knowledgeable, capable and enthusiastic learner, fully prepared and excited for the opportunities and challenges of secondary school.

Autumn Term 1

Autumn Term 1 is an exciting and important time as children begin their final year of primary school. As the oldest children in the school, Year 6 pupils are encouraged to take on greater responsibility, demonstrate leadership and act as positive role models within our school community.

During the first few weeks, we focus on helping children settle confidently into their new routines and establish the high expectations that will support them throughout the year. We develop positive learning behaviours, encourage independence and resilience, and create a supportive classroom environment where children feel confident to share their ideas, ask questions and challenge themselves.

In Reading, children explore a range of high-quality and increasingly challenging texts. They develop their fluency, vocabulary and comprehension while learning to analyse language and structure, make inferences, summarise key information and justify their ideas using evidence from the text.

In English, children build on their previous learning to develop confidence and control as writers. Through engaging texts and meaningful experiences, they write for a range of purposes and audiences, selecting appropriate vocabulary and grammatical structures to create writing with impact. Children are encouraged to plan, draft, edit and refine their work independently, taking pride in producing high-quality writing.

In Mathematics, children build on their existing knowledge through carefully sequenced learning. They develop fluency in key skills while deepening their understanding through reasoning and problem-solving. Children are encouraged to explain their mathematical thinking, make connections between concepts and apply their knowledge confidently to increasingly complex and unfamiliar problems.

Our wider curriculum provides exciting opportunities for children to explore important knowledge and ideas across a range of subjects. Through engaging topics, investigations and meaningful learning experiences, children are encouraged to be curious, think critically and develop a deeper understanding of the world around them.

Throughout Autumn Term 1, we will support children to develop the confidence, resilience and independence they need for a successful final year at primary school. As they begin to look ahead to secondary school, we encourage every child to embrace new challenges, take pride in their achievements and make the most of every opportunity during their final year with us.
