Our Year 5 Curriculum

Year 5 is an exciting stage in a child's journey through Key Stage 2. As children move further through their primary education, our curriculum builds on their previous learning while providing increasing opportunities to develop independence, confidence and a deeper understanding of the world around them.

Each day, children take part in carefully planned direct teaching in Reading, English and Mathematics. Learning is carefully sequenced to build on prior knowledge, introduce new concepts and provide regular opportunities for children to practise, revisit and apply what they have learned. This helps children to develop secure knowledge and make meaningful connections across their learning.

In Reading, children explore a rich range of high-quality fiction, non-fiction and poetry. They develop fluency, comprehension and vocabulary while learning to discuss, analyse and respond thoughtfully to increasingly challenging texts.

In English, carefully selected texts and engaging experiences inspire children to write for a wide range of purposes and audiences. Children develop their skills in planning, drafting, editing and improving their writing, while strengthening their understanding of vocabulary, grammar, punctuation and spelling.

In Mathematics, children develop increasingly secure and sophisticated mathematical understanding. They are encouraged to use their knowledge fluently, explain their reasoning clearly and apply their learning to solve a range of problems. Through practical resources, visual representations and abstract methods, children develop the confidence to tackle increasingly complex mathematical concepts.

Our wider curriculum is broad, ambitious and carefully planned to develop a rich body of knowledge across subjects including Science, History, Geography, Computing, Art, Design and Technology, Music, Physical Education and Religious Education. Wherever possible, meaningful connections are made between areas of learning, allowing children to explore important concepts in depth and apply their knowledge in a range of contexts.

Throughout Year 5, children are encouraged to become reflective, resilient and independent learners. They are supported to ask thoughtful questions, think critically, work collaboratively and take increasing responsibility for their learning. We encourage children to embrace challenges, learn from mistakes and take pride in their progress.

Our aim is for every child to leave Year 5 as a confident, knowledgeable and enthusiastic learner, well prepared for the challenges and opportunities of their final year of primary school.

Autumn Term 1

Autumn Term 1 is an exciting opportunity for children to return to school, settle into their new class and begin the year with confidence and enthusiasm. As children enter Year 5, they are encouraged to take greater responsibility for their learning and develop the independence, resilience and maturity needed as they move towards the final stages of their primary education.

During the first few weeks, we focus on establishing positive routines, clear expectations and strong learning behaviours. We work together to create a supportive classroom community where children feel confident to share their ideas, ask questions, take risks in their learning and learn from their mistakes.

In Reading, children explore a range of high-quality and increasingly challenging texts. They develop their fluency, vocabulary and comprehension while learning to discuss texts in greater depth, make inferences, summarise key ideas and justify their responses using evidence.

In English, children build on their previous learning to develop greater control and confidence as writers. Through engaging texts and meaningful experiences, they write for a range of purposes and audiences while developing their use of ambitious vocabulary, grammar and punctuation. Children are encouraged to plan carefully, draft thoughtfully and edit their work independently to improve its accuracy and impact.

In Mathematics, children develop their understanding through carefully sequenced learning that builds on prior knowledge. They are encouraged to reason mathematically, explain their thinking clearly and apply their knowledge to increasingly complex problems. Through fluency, reasoning and problem-solving, children develop the confidence and perseverance needed to tackle new mathematical challenges.

Our wider curriculum provides exciting opportunities for children to explore new knowledge and deepen their understanding across a range of subjects. Through engaging topics, investigations and meaningful learning experiences, children are encouraged to be curious, think critically and make connections between different areas of their learning.

Throughout Autumn Term 1, we will support children to develop the independence, resilience and positive attitudes that will help them throughout Year 5 and beyond. Our aim is for every child to make a confident start to the year, take pride in their achievements and continue to grow as a thoughtful, capable and enthusiastic learner.
