Useful Information
Homework - Homework will be given out on a Friday and due in on the following Wednesday. Homework in Year 3 is Spellings and times tables which are tested on a Thursday. All the children have been given a login sheet for Times Tables Rock Stars and Reading Eggs which they can use to practise times tables facts and reading skills at home. If you cannot find your login sheet, please contact your class teacher who can sort out a copy to keep at home.
Reading - Children are expected to read at least 5 times a week at home. Please record reading at home in reading records. Reading records will be checked daily, and a record kept of how many times children have read at home. Children earn housepoints for the number of times that they read and can also work towards a class treat as part of our current reading challenge.
PE - We have 2 PE lessons per week - 1 outdoor and 1 indoor. Please come into school wearing PE on your class PE day.

Our Year 3 Curriculum
Year 3 marks an exciting step in every child's learning journey as they move from Key Stage 1 into Key Stage 2. Our curriculum is designed to support this important transition, building upon the strong foundations children have already developed while encouraging them to become increasingly confident, independent and curious learners.
Each day, children take part in carefully planned direct teaching sessions in Reading, English and Mathematics. These lessons provide children with the essential knowledge and skills they need to become fluent readers, confident writers and successful mathematicians. Teaching is carefully sequenced so that children can build on prior learning, practise new skills and develop a secure understanding over time.
In Reading, children develop their fluency, vocabulary and comprehension through high-quality texts and engaging discussions. In English, children are inspired by a range of carefully chosen books and experiences, developing their writing skills across a variety of purposes and genres. In Mathematics, children build their understanding through practical resources, visual representations, mathematical reasoning and problem-solving.
Our wider curriculum is broad, ambitious and carefully planned to inspire curiosity and a love of learning. Through subjects such as Science, History, Geography, Computing, Art, Design and Technology, Music, Physical Education and Religious Education, children develop important knowledge and skills while making meaningful connections between their learning.
We provide engaging opportunities for children to explore, investigate, ask questions and apply their learning in a range of meaningful contexts. Knowledge is regularly revisited and built upon, helping children to remember more and make links between what they already know and new learning.
Throughout Year 3, we encourage children to take increasing responsibility for their learning, develop resilience when faced with challenges and take pride in their achievements. Our aim is for every child to develop the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to flourish throughout Key Stage 2 and beyond.
Autumn Term 1
Autumn Term 1 is an exciting time as children begin their journey in Key Stage 2. Moving into Year 3 brings new opportunities, increased independence and new learning experiences. During the first few weeks, we focus on helping children settle confidently into their new classroom, establish positive routines and understand the expectations of Key Stage 2.
In English, children build upon their previous writing knowledge and develop their skills in writing for a range of purposes and audiences. Through high-quality texts and engaging experiences, children will develop their vocabulary, sentence structure, punctuation and ability to plan, draft and improve their writing.
In Reading, children continue to develop fluency, comprehension and a love of reading. They will explore a range of carefully selected texts, using discussion and questioning to deepen their understanding and develop their vocabulary.
In Mathematics, children build upon their existing knowledge through carefully sequenced lessons. During the term, they will develop their understanding of key mathematical concepts, using practical equipment, pictorial representations and abstract methods to build confidence. Children will also be encouraged to explain their reasoning and apply their learning to solve problems.
Across the wider curriculum, learning will be enriched through exciting and meaningful topics. Children will have opportunities to explore, investigate and ask questions as they develop new knowledge and skills across a range of subjects. Learning will be carefully planned to make connections where appropriate and help children understand how their learning fits into the wider world.
